Steel Storm Shelter

Also known as: steel safe room, welded steel shelter, plate steel shelter

Why steel and not concrete for above-ground

A poured-concrete above-ground room needs forming, curing, and rebar engineering for every install. A steel unit arrives on a flatbed and is set in under a day. For underground use, concrete and steel are roughly equal in cost and performance.

Corrosion and coatings

Reputable steel shelters use a powder-coat or industrial enamel inside and out. Bare steel will surface-rust within a year in humid garages. Check the producer's coating warranty against your climate.
