Shelter Types
Concrete Storm Shelter
Also known as: precast concrete shelter, reinforced concrete safe room, concrete safe room
Precast vs poured-in-place
- Precast: one-piece unit cast at a yard, set with a crane. Faster install, tighter ICC 500 documentation.
- Poured-in-place: forms built on-site, concrete pumped. More design flexibility, requires engineered drawings.
Why concrete beats steel underground
Buried steel needs an exterior coating or galvanizing system that lasts 30+ years in soil contact. Concrete needs none. Over a 50-year ownership horizon, a concrete underground typically wins on total cost.
