State Programs
Dixie Alley
Also known as: Southeast tornado belt
Why Dixie Alley is uniquely dangerous
- Nocturnal tornadoes are more common, reducing reaction time
- Trees and terrain reduce warning visibility
- Manufactured housing density is high in some affected counties
- Storm motion is often faster than in the Plains
Shelter implications
The nocturnal pattern shifts the cost-benefit toward in-home above-ground shelters. A backyard cellar that takes 30 seconds to reach during daylight may not be reachable in the middle of the night during a fast-moving event.
Distinguished from
- Tornado Alley
- Plains tornadoes are more often daylight events with longer warning lead times. Dixie Alley events are more often nocturnal and embedded in larger systems.
