Shelter Types
ADA Compliance
Also known as: wheelchair accessible shelter, ADA shelter
Key ADA dimensions for shelters
- 32-inch minimum clear door width
- 60-inch turning radius inside the shelter
- Flush or low-profile threshold (1/2 inch maximum)
- Door hardware operable with closed fist (lever, not knob)
Why above-ground is usually the answer
Underground shelters require descending a ladder or steep stairs, which is not workable for wheelchair users or people with significant mobility limitations. An ADA-rated above-ground shelter in the garage or as a closet conversion is the realistic option.
